Walking into a comic convention for the first time is exhilarating, but can be overwhelming at the same time. Doing your research before going is key to enjoying yourself to the highest extent. Some things I wish I knew:
Tip #1: Wear comfortable shoes
Seriously.
You will be walking a LOT. If you plan on wearing cosplay, please make sure to plan around being able to wear sneakers. There are some clever tricks to cover the look of sneakers if that isn’t fitting your outfit.
Tip #2: Remember to eat
It can be easy to get excited and forget to eat, but keep it top of mind. Passing out at comic con is not what you have in mind for the day! There are typically different food spots at the larger comic cons, but bring a few protein bars in between. Drink plenty of water, too.
Tip #3: Have a Game Plan, but be flexible
The truth is, panels fill up. Make sure to pre-plan signing up for NYCC panels because the larger ones WILL fill. There are so many things to see, so don’t get discouraged if you aren’t able to make all the panels you want to. There are different sized rooms for the panels, for example, Daryl Dixon: Book of Carol panel was absolutely packed front to back at NYCC 2024. Also, take a look at all the panels available – something might pique your interest that you didn’t expect!
Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to say hi!
Comic cons are full of community. I’ve met some of the friendliest people with similar passions in lines at comic con. Cosplayers are typically happy to talk or take photos with others – just ask! They likely spent lots of time on their outfits and are happy to have their hard work recognized.
Tip #5: You Don’t Have to Do it All
This goes in hand with being flexible, but don’t feel like you have to be doing something. There’s no way to do comic cons wrong, as long as you have a good time, you succeeded!
