Fans of HBO’s The Last of Us were caught off guard this week after reports began circulating that production on season 3 had been “halted” or “canceled.” Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
According to multiple reports, filming for season 3 has entered a temporary hiatus from June 1 through June 28 while production takes a short break in Vancouver. The pause is not expected to affect the overall production schedule, with filming still anticipated to continue through the end of the year.

What’s Going On?
Season 3 officially began filming earlier this year and remains on track for a 2027 release. While the word “hiatus” understandably caused concern among fans, current reports suggest this is simply a temporary production pause rather than a major setback.
Some reports have connected the break to logistical challenges surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will bring heavy traffic to Vancouver over the next several weeks.

What Will Season 3 Be About?
Without getting too deep into spoiler territory, season 3 is expected to shift focus toward Abby’s story following the events of season 2. Kaitlyn Dever’s role is expected to expand significantly.
The season is also expected to introduce additional characters familiar to fans of the game, including Lev and Yara (YAY).
Even before news of the filming pause surfaced, HBO had already indicated that fans would likely be waiting until 2027 for the next chapter of the story. That means we’ve still got quite a while before Ellie and Abby return to our screens.
For now, it seems The Last of Us season 3 is still moving forward as planned.
Are you excited to see the story continue from Abby’s perspective, or are you still recovering from everything season 2 put us through?
